Salfords continued there good run of form with a convincing 8 wicket win at home to Newdigate.
After winning the toss Newdigate decided to bat first. Graham Steward 0-29 returning after 3 weeks out and Rob Besley 2-19 bowled a tight opening spell with Besley sending back both openers to leave newdigate 52-2 after 15 overs. A bowling change brought 2 wickets in a over as Ian Catt recalled to first team action took two wickets in his first over to land impressive figures of 2-6 from 7 overs. Expeirenced Tony Palmer also bowled a tight spell of 1-21 from 9 overs his deserved wicket aided by a superb low catch by keeper Mark Wood. Newdigate were behind the rate after 30 overs on 90-5. Debutant George Fisher was targetted by newdigates lower order with his five overs going for 32 but he bowled some fine balls and was rewarded with his first wicket for the club. Salfords top spinner Dave Lancaster proved more difficult to get away as he clean up the tail taking 4-24 leaving newdigate 154 all out. After tea salfords had 46 overs to reach there target but soon lost a wicket as Martin Stone was beaten by a slower ball and was clean bowled for just 4 runs. Salman Shah looked in positive mood smashing 2 fours but his home jinx struck again as he was caught in the gully for 10 the score being 22-2. Newdigate were buyoant at this stage and Besley and Steward had to rebuild the innings. But the pair batted brillantly and saw salfords home with an unbeaten 133 partnership. Besley finishing 79 not out including 14 boundaries and Steward a patient 34 not out to provide salfords a 8 wicket win. Another 37 points sees salfords rise a place in the table with the trip to leaders North Holmwood awaiting next week. |
