Salfords Frustrated at Newdigate |
|
The seasons opening league encounter saw salfords travel to newdigate.
Salfords won the toss and elected to bat first on a decent looking pitch. An early setback saw Nathan Beaver dismissed LBW for just 2. An excellent partnership of 104 between Peter Speers (34) and Salman Shah took the score to 110 before speers mistimed a pull to mid wicket. Captain Besley joined Shah and another 60 runs were added when Besley fell for 30. Shah continued on and went to a deserved century hitting a six over square leg before falling next ball for a superb 102 on his first team debut. Salfords lower middle order swung the bat to enable salfords to declare after 43 overs on 216-7. After tea salfords took to the field confident of bowling the home side out. But it was clear from the first ball that newdigate were not interested in chasing salfords total and a frustrating afternoon followed. Salfords opening pair of Atkinson 1-11 and Steward 3-28 could only manage one breakthough from their opening spells. Tony Palmer 1-19 took newdigate second wicket and then Atkinson in his second spell removed the number 4 for 37. But the Newdigate opening bat was still at the crease where he stayed until the final ball batting 47 overs for just 52 runs. He was aided by 4 dropped catches which could be argued cost salfords the chance to win this game. So a winning draw for salfords and 14 points returned from the game. Salfords batting display was very good and the bowling was on the whole steady but catches win matches and this is the area salfords need to improve on. Rob Besley - 04/05/2009 |
