Salfords Spurn Golden Opportunity
Salfords II (148) lost to Old Woking II (223)
Shorn of a number of regular players, stand-in Salfords skipper Peter Speers inserted second-placed Old Woking hoping to exploit any early dampness in the pitch.
Opening bowlers Ian Catt (1-50 in 13) and Allan Weller (0-43 in 15) bowled with great control, as Old Woking found scoring very difficult.  Weller was the unfortunate victim of a number of dropped chances, including one off Old Woking number four Steve Goodchild when he had made five.  This turned out to be a crucial miss by Salfords as Goodchild began to unleash a series of strong strokes between mid on and mid off.  Salfords struggled to keep control during the latter stages of the innings and Old Woking were able to declare on 223-4 after 44 overs, with Goodchild having compiled an excellent 122*.
The victory target of 224 of 46 overs was a fair one.  Following the dismissal of Walsh (5), Van Renen and Harrington batted superbly.  Van Renen  cruised past 50, and had just hit a huge six before he dragged a wide ball onto his stumps for 69, his highest league score of the season.  With 20 overs remaining, Salfords needed less than 100 with seven wickets in hand and victory was well within their reach.  However, the dismissal of Harrington (39) and Humphrey (15) sparked a dismal collapse as Salfords lost their last six wickets for no runs to be all out for 148.
