Salfords 229-4 Dec Headley Old Freemans 106 All Out Salfords travelled to Headley Heath and after losing the toss were asked to bat first.
Openers Steve Harrington and Peter Speers saw off the opening attack with ease and the score reached 50-0 from 10 overs. After looking set Speers then lobbed a catch straight to mid off for 28 and number 3 John Musk was stumped for 14 trying to hit over the top. Salfords were 91-2. In form captain Rob Besley then joined Harrington and the pair formed an excellant partnership of 105 to take the game away from Headley. Harrington fell for a very well made and patient 65. Besley continued the attack and passed 50 for the third match in a row before being run out for 61. Graham Broodryk smashed 22 not out in just 2 overs allowing salfords to declare on 229-4 off 42 overs. After tea salfords declined taking the new ball and opened the bowling with the experienced Tony Palmer and spinner Dave Lancaster. Palmer 1-33 made an early breakthrough in the first over and Lancaster 4-51 removed the other opener. At 23-2 salfords were away to a good start but the Headley number 3 decided to go for his shots and quickly raced to 56 although he was aided by 3 dropped catches. Lancaster finally got his man when Speers took a sharp catch at the second attempt at short mid wicket leaving the home side 87-3. Graham Steward who will admit himself has been below par this season came into the attack and after a poor first over suddenly found his rythum and proved a real handful clean bowling 5 batsman inducing a major collapse that saw Headley lose 5 wickets for no runs leaving them 100-9. Stewards figures were an impressive 5-14.Lancaster struck the final blow and salfords took a maximum 40 points from the game which will now hopefully install confidence back through the whole team. |
