Salfords 189-8 dec   Ockley 190-3

Salfords were not surprisingly asked to bat first on a damp overcast day after losing the toss and were soon a wicket down when steve harrington was adjudged LBW for a duck.

John Musk (18) and Graham Broodryk decided to take on the ockley attack and both were playing cracking straight and cover drives until Musk was unluckily run out with the score on 48. Tony Palmer quickly fell for 6 but skipper Rob Besley joined Broodryk and salfords were looking good again. Besley and Broodryk both passed 50 and looked set until Broodryk was undone by a superb one handed catch by the bowler falling for 55. With the score 150 - 4 after 36 overs salfords went for the big hits. Besley fell for 51 after being stumped and Ian Catt played a controlled innings for 25 before being caught trying to hit over the top. The innings was declared after 45 overs with salfords on 189-8 which should have been enough to at least avoid defeat in difficult conditions.

After tea opening bowler Brett Atkinson 2-23 made an early breakthrough with keeper Mark Wood taking the catch. Spinner Dave Lancaster bowled tight but could not break through from the other end and after 15 overs ockley were 50-1. A change in bowling almost worked but two catches of the ockley opener went down which proved costly. Atkinson returned and removed ockleys number 3 for 38 the score now being 125-2. Fletcher the ockley opener was still at the crease and was dropped twice more before he reached his ton. He eventually fell caught behind but ockley were only 10 runs short from victory. Salfords have to learn quickly after last seasons promotion that catches have to be taken and bowlers need to bowl more accuratley and bowl to their fields if they are be succesful in division 2.
