Salfords crowned champions |
Salfords 232-5 Dec Headley 0-0 Salfords crowned champions Salfords travelled to the superb setting of the city of London Freemans school to play Headley Old Freemans knowing 7 points were needed to clinch the title.
Salfords again lost the toss and were surprised to be inserted on what looked like an excellent batting track. The salfords opening pair of Peter Speers and John Musk recorded 56 for the opening wicket before Speers was caught at point for 18. Musk and Paul Gosling took the score onto 97 when Musk fell for 47 after nicking one through to the keeper. Gosling battled against some hostile bowling from the Headley quickie taking several blows before being bowled of the inside edge. This brought together two in form batsman in the shape of skipper Rob Besley and Tony Palmer. The pair played beautifly and took the score to 200 before palmer went for 39. Besley passed 50 and ended the innings on 56 not out but the best entertainment of the day saw big hitting Brett Atkinson bludgeon the headley bowling for a quick fire 27 off 7 balls which included 3 huge sixes. Salfords declared on 232-5. During the tea interval the predicted rain arrived and brought an end to procedings forcing the game to be abandoned. Both sides took 12 points from the game and the title was sealed for salfords. Salfords captain Besley has been delighted with his sides progress this season, " i was very honoured to have been voted in as captain for this season after only one season at the club and very proud off the way the team has responded to the disapointment of last years relagation. I would like to thank all my players for their total commitment and efforts they have shown and our record of 10 wins 2 draws and just 1 defeat speaks for itself. I was also pleased with the progress of some of our younger players who have established themselves in the first team this season. John Musk, Steve Harrington, Ian Catt and Brett Atkinson have all played major roles in our success. I am sure that if this years squad remain fit and available for next season we will be a force in Division 2 and a push for a second promotion will not be beyond us". With two games to go it is hoped salfords second team will make it a double celebration after the final games on the 1st september. They currently occupy third place and two wins will assure the seconds of promotion. |
