SALFORDS 179 HORSLEY AND SEND 174 Salfords salvaged a victory in this tense ecounter.
Captain Rob Besley won the toss and elected to bat on the first warm sunny afternoon of the season. His decision seemed justified when openers R Kidd (44) and T Palmer (25) scored 69 for the first wicket inside 12 overs. Besley (24) and Connolly (55) then added another decent patnership but after Besley fell a major collapse took place with salfords going from 133-3 to 179 all out.Credit must go to Connolly who after being promoted from number 11 has notched 2 scores of over 50 in 3 innings. After tea salfords for some reason were performing well under par with wayward bowling 4 dropped catches and sloppy fielding. At 153 - 3 salfords looked dead and buried but when spinner D Lancaster 4-33 removed opener Gillingham for 76 salfords sniffed the chance of an unlikely victory. Connolly was brought into the attack and his pace quickly removed 2 more batsman and suddenly horsley were panicking at 159 - 6. Lancaster then took 3 more quick wickets and the match was finely poised with horsley 174 - 9 needing 6 to win. But then disaster struck for the away team when off the last ball off the 44th over the horsley number 5 batsman tried to pinch the strike to protect his number 11 and was superbly run out to give victory to salfords who have now won 5 out 5 and lead the table. |
