HARRINGTON CONTINUES UNCORKS ANOTHER WINNER |
BROCKHAM GREEN II 58 SALFORDS II 143 SATURDAY 19 MAY 2007.
Salfords were asked to bat and were in significant trouble at 7-4 as Brockham’s Pitchford exploited the damp surface brilliantly, obtaining significant seam movement to send back four of Salfords’ top five bowled for nought.
Captain Sanjay Patel then joined Dickie Harrington in a 23 over, 44-run partnership that was initially aimed at restoring some credit to the shocked Salfords outfit, but that ultimately proved crucial. After Patel was bowled for 9, Harrington cut loose with some exquisite drive and cuts, displaying timing that was beyond all the other batsmen on the day. Like the fine Shiraz that he occasionally partakes in, Harrington seems to improve with age. Following his 104 against Capel, this innings on 93 not out on a day when only one other batsman reached double figures was a tribute initially to application and solid technique in difficult conditions. Subsequently his talent and timing came to the fore as he hit 14 boundaries, including a huge straight six that even dragged a few watchers away from the cup final. Salfords were all out for 143 in the 47th over, with Pitchford ending on 7-31.
Brockham’s reply began in uncannily similar fashion to the Salfords innings, as Luke Edmonds bowled with pace and control, obtaining sideways movement and exploiting variable bounce to bowl four of the Brockham top five leaving the home side reeling at 9-4. Although Edmonds’ (4-15) effectiveness was reduced by a groin strain, there was to be no respite for Brockham as the ever-miserly Allan Weller (3-15) and Ryan Eaton (3-15) continued the fall of wickets. Brockham eventually subsided to all out for 58, as Salfords completed a win that had seemed highly unlikely earlier in the day.
