Salfords first eleven opened the 2010 season with a home fixture against newly promoted Capel 2nds. With the skies grey and with the threat of rain around salfords skipper Rob Besley won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first.
The salfords opening attack of Debutant Martin Horrocks and Brett Atkinson proved to be a handful for the visitors openers with both taking a wicket each with the score 28-2. Horrocks 2-34 bowled a superb line and length in his 11 overs and along with another debutant Jamie Hunt 3-14 who moved the ball away enabling keeper Paul Ballam to take 2 catches capel were reduced to 60-6 and an early finish looked to be on the cards. But a stubborn partnership of 45 between captain Taylor and Lee 23 Not Out held up salfords. Tony Palmer 0-25 was unlucky not to take a wicket but the partnership was broken when an Edmonds 1-9 bouncer was top edged to Horrocks who took a good catch. The return of Atkinson 3-20 accounted for 2 batsman and a run out saw the capel innings close on 141 from 47.5 overs. After a rain break and tea salfords began their reply and soon lost Besley for 3 who played an unusual rash shot and was caught and Jamie Hunt who was pushed up the order fell for a quick 14 salfords were wobbling slightly at 24-2. Capel sensed an upset but a patient innings from Ricky Kidd 29 and a brilliant knock from Luke Edmonds saw the total reach 120 before kidd was bowled. As often happens after a good partnership Edmonds was heading back to the pavilion soon afterwards but not before he had scord 66 including 11 excellent boundaries. At 128-4 salfords were nearly home and Ian Catt 12 not out and Tony Palmer 7 not out passed the 141 needed with no further alarms. Stiffer tests are undoubtly ahead but this win sets salfords off on the right foot for the season. http://salfords.play-cricket.com/scoreboard/scorecard.asp?id=11020369 |
